It is with great sadness that I have to report the death, on Tuesday 15th
April, of my good friend and well-known author David K Brown.

I have known DK in a professional capacity for almost 30 years and we have
exchanged information on a regular basis. His knowledge of warship
construction was phenomenal and he was always willing to share this
knowledge with anyone that needed it. He was a senior member of the Royal
Corps of Naval Constructors and rose to be Chief Constructor for the
Admiralty Experiment Works and then Head of Ship Design Policy. He had been
a leading member of the Council of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects
and on the Council of the Navy Records Society.

He is probably best known amongst listers as a specialist author, writing on
the design and construction of warships from the mid-1800s to the present
time. Although a great deal of his subject was highly technical he had that
rare quality of making it readable for the less gifted amongst us (Norman
Friedman is another quality author with this rare talent). I am proud to
say I have a number of his books on my bookshelves including "Before the
Ironclad" 1990, "Warrior to Dreadnought" 1997, "The Grand Fleet" 1999,
"Nelson to Vanguard" 2000, "Rebuilding the Royal Navy" 2003 (in
collaboration with another friend of mine, George Moore, also sadly no
longer with us), and his last effort "Atlantic Escorts" 2007. He also wrote
numerous articles for the "Warship" annuals and many technical papers.

He will be very greatly missed.
