Some serious works having mentioned Pluton under the name of La Tour d'Auvergne, it seems useful to set the record straight on this point.
1. By Ministerial Despatch 609 EMG.3, 13 May 1939, re "utilization of Pluton andDuguay Trouin," the Ministry foresaw using Pluton as annex to Jeanne d'Arc at the Training School, effective 1 June 1940.
2. Ministerial Circular 675 EMG.3m 1 June 1939, re "The Names of ships in the 1938 Program, and in the complementary part of this Program. Change of name of Bambra and Pluton," states in paragraph 26: "On the date of her attachment to the Training School, the cruiser Pluton will take the name of La Tour d'Auvergne."
3. Finally, in Circular 622 EMG.3, 17 May 1939, on the establishment of the new organization of the forces, it is stated in paragraph 42 that "Pluton will be incorporated into the 5th Squadron on 10 June [1939]. Instructions below will fix the conditions under which Pluton will cease, at the beginning of summer 1940, to be part of the 5th Squadron, to be coupled with Jeanne d'Arc as part of the Training School."
4. In conclusion, Pluton, accidentally sunk on 13 September 1939 in the port of Casablanca, was never actually renamed.
