Bulgaria To Buy NATO-Standard Belgium Frigate

The Bulgarian government March 17 approved the purchase for 23 million euros ($30.6 million) of a 20-year-old Belgium frigate, as the former communist state revamps its navy to comply with NATO standards, government spokesman Dimitar Tsonev said.

“The purchase will provide the Bulgarian navy with the operational capability to perform its tasks within NATO,” Tsonev said.

The frigate will be the first Bulgarian military ship to comply with NATO standards.

Bulgaria plans to modernize the ship for an additional 35 million euros, Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov said last December when he discussed the deal with his Belgian counterpart Andre Flahaut.

Bulgaria joined NATO last year and is now in the process of bringing its military forces up to the standards of the North Atlantic alliance.

Sofia expects to finalize the deal and receive the frigate by the end of the year.
