Remarks: Ordered in spring 1994 for $14.6 million, with an option for a second and plans for a possible additional two; constructed in cooperation with Western Canada Marine Group. No further order has been placed as of 2003, however. Designed by Polar Associates, Canada. Intended for fisheries and economic exclusion zone patrol, search-and-rescue duties, pollution control, and emergency towing. A half-sister was built in Ireland for the Irish Navy in 1998–99. Refitted at Mumbai Naval Dockyard, India, from 12-99 to 11-4-00 to correct propeller shaft problems and other engineering deficiencies; shaft seals were again repaired at Mumbai from 3-01 to 9-01.

Hull systems: Has a deep-vee hullform with twin rudders and a signature-reduction superstructure shape to reduce radar signature when ship is coming toward the radar. There are a hangar and flight deck for one small helicopter, although the hangar is said to be cramped. Two fire monitors are fitted atop the hangar, with a single 600-m3/hr firepump. Has a Flume-type stabilization system and a four-berth sick bay. Was originally intended to achieve 22 kts but can reach only 18.

Combat systems: The 40-mm gunmount was donated by India and is locally controlled.
