0724 Noting that the two torpedo plane groups to starboard of the Akagi were preparing to launch their torpedoes, she goes into evasive action. Then, seeing that she was about to be dive bombed, she makes maximum reverse turn.
0724 Fires break out aboard Kaga.
0725 Akagi notes fire aboard Kaga and also that fighters were commencing to take off.
0725 Chikuma reports dive bombing attacks on Akagi.
0726 Three bombers dive on Akagi from position bearing 80 degrees to port, altitude about 2,000 meters (angle of dive, about 50 degrees). At about 500 meters altitude, bombs were loosed. First was a near miss about 10 meters abeam of the bridge; second hit near the elevator amidship (fatal hit); third hit the flight deck on the portside, aft (damage: several holes to after deck, 1 emergency personnel killed.)
0726 Chikuma reports fires aboard the Akagi.
0726 Tone opens fire with forward machine guns on enemy planes approaching from dead ahead.
0728 Chikuma sights one enemy plane bearing 16 degrees to starboard on the horizon, and proceeding to port. Soryu sustains bomb hits.
0729 Induced explosions from torpedoes stored in Akagi's hangars begins (ammunition and bomb storage rooms ordered flooded). The forward groups were successfully flooded immediately, but because of valve damages to those in the aft sections, none could be automatically flooded except the ammunition room for #2 main turret. (They were finally flooded two and half hours later.)
